AMCON Distributing enjoys a healthy meal, but it's not without its vices. The company's a wholesale distributor of consumer products, including cigarettes, and a retailer of health and natural foods. AMCON serves some 4,000 convenience stores, supermarkets, and institutional customers in the Great Plains and Rocky Mountain regions. It also distributes candy, beverages, groceries, paper products, and health and beauty care products. AMCON operates about a dozen regional health food stores run under the Chamberlin's and Akin's banners. In 2006 the firm scrapped plans to sell those stores (operating under unit The Healthy Edge) to director and former chairman William Wright, who owns a 26% stake in AMCON.
