Another bloody encounter of the Civil War occurred at Shiloh, documented in America's Civil War: 1862 -- Shiloh, Surprise & Slaughter in Tennessee. In a surprise attack, the Confederate army, under the command of Albert Sidney Johnston, inflicted heavy casualties on the Union soldiers, headed by Ulysses S. Grant. Johnston received a mortal wound in the conflict, and the tide turned when the Union army was reinforced with additional troops and supplies by Don Carlos Buell. The battle cast a dark shadow over the abilities of Grant, who still had the support of President Lincoln. ~ Alice Day, Rovi
