The city of Atlanta was a prize sought by the Union generals. After other major Southern cities had fallen, the Confederates hung on stubbornly, and refused to accept defeat. America's Civil War: 1864 -- Atlanta Yankees Invade the Deep South traces the increasing domination of the Union forces, as Ulysses S. Grant becomes commander of the Northern army, and William Tecumseh Sherman is the leader in the West. As Grant's troops advance on Lee's forces in Richmond, Sherman comes up against the Army of Tennessee, led by Joseph E. Johnston. ~ Alice Day, Rovi
