The America's Cup World Series is a series of match race regattas leading up to the 2013 America's Cup.

The Yachts

Team New Zealand's AC45 in April 2011.

The World Series uses AC45 catamarans, a one-design wingsail catamaran with foils designed specifically for the event by Mike Drummond and the Oracle Racing engineering team. The AC45 is intended as a smaller version to the larger AC72 class rule and has the following specifications:

  • build: honeycombcore carbonfiber sandwich
  • length: 13.45 m (44.1 ft)
  • beam: 6.9 m (23 ft)
  • weight: 1,290–1,320 kg (2,800–2,900 lb)
  • maximum draught : 2.7 m (8 ft 10 in)
  • air draught : 21.5 m (71 ft) without extension
  • wing: 20 m (66 ft) 85 m2 (910 sq ft) mast element with three slotted flaps
  • wing and flap extension: 4 m (13 ft) high, 8 m2 (86 sq ft) area
  • jib area: 48 m2 (520 sq ft)
  • gennaker area: 125 m2 (1,350 sq ft)
  • builders: Core Builders (NZ), Cookson Boats (NZ)
  • crew: 5 + 1 guest

Teams

  • Oracle Racing fields two boats in the World Series.[1]
  • Aleph-Équipe de France announced in April 2012 its withdrawal (citing financial reasons and lack of sponsorship) from both the 2012 ACWS and the 34th America's cup.
  • The 2 teams of Luna Rossa joined the series in 2012 at the Naples venue, while Green Comm Racing did not compete.
  • Ben Ainslie Racing will compete in the 2012-2013 ACWS, starting with the San Francisco 21-26 August event.
