The celebrated anthology was first published in a series of twenty volumes by Princeton University Press in the early 1940s, under the general editorship of Barrett H. Clark. The anthology dealt with the work of such early playwrights as William Dunlap and James A. Herne and, with few exceptions, the plays included had never before been published. The research was accomplished with the aid of the Rockefeller Foundation under the auspices of the Dramatists' Guild of the Authors' League of America. The set has been republished by Indiana University Press.
