The American Battle Monuments Commission ensures that memorials honoring the sacrifices of American soldiers receive the respect that they deserve. Established in 1923, the American Battle Monuments Commission is an independent agency of the executive branch of the US government. The Commission is charged with designing, constructing, and maintaining permanent American military burial grounds in foreign countries; establishing memorials inside and outside of the US; and overseeing the design, construction, and maintenance of US military monuments and markers erected on foreign soil by US citizens, as well as private and public organizations.
