The American Diabetes Association (ADA) lives for the day when it has no customers, but for now seeks to serve the more than 28 million children and adults in the US who have the disease. It is a nonprofit research, information, and advocacy organization that is working to prevent and cure diabetes as well as to improve the lives of people affected by diabetes. The ADA has operations in all 50 states and Washington, DC. Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes is the group's main fundraiser; others include the Tour de Cure (cycling); School Walk for Diabetes; and Kiss-A-Pig, which honors the pig for its role in discovering the effectiveness of insulin in controlling diabetes. The ADA was founded in 1940.
