The American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) is a nonprofit organization established in 2009 created to support the plaintiffs in Perry v. Brown (formerly Perry v. Schwarzenegger), a federal lawsuit to overturn Proposition 8 in California.[2] AFER retained former U.S. Solicitor General Theodore Olson and David Boies (who worked on opposite sides in Bush v. Gore) to file the suit.[3][4] AFER was founded by political consultant Chad Griffin.[5] AFER board members include Griffin, Rob Reiner, Dustin Lance Black, and Bruce Cohen.[2][6]
AFER, along with theater artist organization Broadway Impact,[7] sponsors "8 ", a staged reenactment of the trial testimony, and has licensed it for readings across the U.S. on college campuses and in community theaters free of charge.[8][9][10]

Among the activities of AFER are Marriage News Watch (formerly known as This Week in Prop 8 until April 24, 2011), a weekly web video news program hosted by Matt Baume focused on news concerning legal advances for same-sex unions around the world. It was previously hosted on Stop8.org (through YouTube), which was redirected to AFER's website in October 2011 when Baume became a paid employee of the organization. Baume performs research and communications for the organization.
