American High School is a secondary school located at 18350 NW 67 Avenue in the Country Club CDP of unincorporated Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States in Miami.[1] The principal is Luis E. Diaz. The school has been named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.[2]

History

In 2009 Hialeah Gardens High School will open, taking attendance boundary territory from Barbara Goleman High School and Miami Springs High School. In turn Goleman will take territory from American High School.[3]

American has sent students to highly acclaimed universities, such as Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, MIT and Brown.

Overview

American was opened in 1976 (the year of America's bicentennial); thus, its name, mascot (the patriot) and colors (red, white, and blue) were chosen to reflect this. The school uses a Hialeah address but mainly serves northern Miami Lakes, including Palm Springs North and The Country Club of Miami.American's main athletic rival is Barbara Goleman High School. Other rival schools include, Hialeah-Miami Lakes High School, Miami Carol City High School, Hialeah High School and Miramar High School.

In 2006 The Girls Varsity Softball Team, The Boys Bowling Team & the Boys & Girls Soccer Team all won District Championships. In 2009 the Girls Varsity Soccer Team won the District Championship and the Boys Soccer Team won the GMAC Championship. Henry Chirino won the state wrestling championship in his weight class.

American is composed of 3 buildings. The main building which houses most of the classrooms, and the buildings which house the freshman class in order for there to be enough room for the rest of the student body in the main building.

Demographics

American is known to have one of the most varied school populations in the district, it accommodates both high income and low income families. It's student population is 79% Hispanic, 11% Black, 8% White non-Hispanic, and 1% of Asian descent. 47% of the students receive free or reduced priced lunch. The district average is 44%.
