US Government Guide:

"American House of Lords"

The press has sometimes compared the U.S. Senate to the House of Lords, the upper chamber of the British Parliament. But senators actually have far greater power than the Lords and are much more involved in legislation. The term “House of Lords” has also been used to suggest the special privileges and “lordly” behavior of the Senate.
