1757The American Magazine and Monthly Chronicle. A monthly magazine established by William Smith and published by William Bradford. As provost of the College of Philadelphia, Smith had founded an intellectual group called the Swains. The American Magazine served as its literary outlet. This was in line with Smith's original plan for the publication, which he dreamed would encourage the genius of America and showcase the colonies' capability for independent rule.
