| 1787 | The Constitution of the United States. On May 25 the Constitutional Convention convened in Philadelphia "to render the Constitution of the federal government adequate to the exigencies of the union" and on September 17, the provisions to establish congressional, presidential, and judicial powers were accepted by the delegates and ratified by June 21, 1788, taking effect on March 4, 1789. The first ten amendments, the Bill of Rights, would be adopted by Congress in 1791. |
