Founded in 1961,[3] the American School of Kuwait (ASK) is a K-12 institution which also includes a pre-school (referred to as the Child Development Center[4]). ASK operates with the approval of the Kuwaiti government and is associated with the United States Department of State through the Office of Overseas Schools.[5] It has been accredited by the Middle States Association of College and Secondary Schools since 1971[6] and is formally recognized by the Kuwait Ministry of Education.[7]

The ASK mission statement is "The American School of Kuwait educates the whole child to become a productive, life-long learner who thinks critically, acts with integrity and is equipped to excel in American higher education."[8]

History

In 1963 a group of American parents began the process of forming a new international school modeled after the "authentic American educational plan." This new school's first term began in September 1964 in the Dasman Area of Sharq, Kuwait[9] as the International School of Kuwait with an official ceremony on November 5, 1964, presided over by the Minister of Education Abdulla Al Jaber.[10]

In 1969 the school moved to improved facilities in Surra, Kuwait. Enrollment increased, and the ministry of Kuwait requested that it change its name to the "American School of Kuwait." Twenty-four years later, in 1995, ASK moved again to a new campus in the Hawalli area of Kuwait where it is still located.[11]

Present day

As of 2005, the campus has undergone various changes. Turf fields have been added and computer labs updated. BAE Systems has donated the computer facilities of eight labs as part of the Kuwaiti government-mandated offset program.
