A pacifist group founded in 1915 and dissolved in 1922. Initially known as the American League for the Limitation of Armaments, the organization changed its name to American Union Against Militarism in 1916. Members lobbied in Washington, D.C., and established a Civil Liberties Bureau, which later became the American Civil Liberties Union. The group, whose theme song, “I Didn't Raise My Boy to Be a Soldier, ” became a national hit, was part of the successful effort to avoid war with Mexico in 1916.
