AUA was founded by Neal S. Simon, a lawyer and former president of Ross University.[2] AUA began instruction in 2004.[3] In 2008, the Manipal Education and Medical Group purchased the college from New York based Greater Caribbean Learning Resources Inc. [4]
The school was founded in 2009 as the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences[5] It accepted its first students in January 2010 into a preclinical training program. The curriculum consisted of five semesters of preclinical study, taught by a small permanent veterinary faculty and a rotational system of visiting faculty.[6] In December 2011 the veterinary school closed and all students were transferred to St. Georges University. [7]
The nursing school has been discontinued due to lack of U.S. recognition [8] and pending lawsuit [9]
The School of Medicine confers upon its graduates the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. The MD program is a 10 semester course of study. Semesters 1-4 are basic sciences semesters that are completed at the university's Antigua campus.[10] Semester 5 is completed at one of the university's five locations in the United States.[11] Semesters 6-10 consist of clinical rotations that are completed at AUA-affiliated hospitals in the United States.[12] Base tuition for the School of Medicine in 2011 was $12,282 per semester.[13]
Pre-medical coursework leading to an AAS or BS degree may be completed via the College of Arts & Sciences. The pre-medical program is designed for recent high school graduates and current undergraduate students who do not have the necessary prerequisite courses to qualify for the MD program.[14] Students who successfully complete the program earn either an Associate of Science degree in Health Sciences or a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Human Sciences and proceed into the MD program at the College of Medicine.[15]
The American University of Antigua operates under the laws of Antigua and Barbuda pursuant to its Charter which was issued by the Government in 2003 and revalidated in 2004.[16]
The School of Medicine is listed in the FAIMER International Medical Education Directory[3] and the AVICENNA Directory for medicine.[17]
AUA students are eligible for clinical training, residency, and licensure in New York and California.[1]
In January 2010, AUA opened its doors to a new 17-acre (69,000 m2) campus. The $60 million facility houses over 75,000 square feet (7,000 m2) of classrooms, a multi-story library, study rooms, and student government, and administrative and faculty offices.[18]
In August 2011, AUA announced plans for an $18 million expansion of the Antigua campus.[1]
AUA graduates have obtained residency positions in the following specialties:[19]
