amino acid index
a numerical scale that quantifies particular amino acid properties (e.g. size, polarity, weight, hydrophobicity). For example, the aliphatic index gives a measure of the relative volume of a protein occupied by aliphatic side chains. Amino acid indices are often used to predict the properties of the proteins in which they occur.
