A folic acid antagonist, C19H20N8O5, used as an antineoplastic agent. It has been mainly replaced by methotrexate.

4-aminofolic acid; a potent inhibitor of dihydrofolate reductase (Ki < 10−9 M). It is used as an antineoplastic agent in the treatment of acute leukemia and choriocarcinoma. Aminopterin blocks nucleotide biosynthesis and thus also DNA biosynthesis, and has a similar action to amethopterin. It is a component of HAT, a selective medium used in tissue culture.
