A
tricyclic antidepressant drug used for the treatment of pain resulting from nerve damage and bedwetting in children; it is not now recommended for treating depressive illness. It is available, on
prescription only, as tablets or a solution for oral use.
Side effects: include dry mouth, sedation, blurred vision, constipation, nausea, difficulty in urinating, palpitation and fast heart rate, sweating, tremor, rashes and allergic reactions, behavioural disturbances, confusion (especially in the elderly), and interference with sexual function. There may be increased appetite and weight gain, drowsiness, nervousness or insomnia, weakness and fatigue, and changes in blood sugar concentrations.
