A solution that gives off a pungent vapour. Strong or weak ammonia solutions are used in decongestant and rubefacient preparations.

Precautions:
ammonia can be caustic and irritating, depending on the concentration. It can irritate eyes and mucous membranes and should not be swallowed, as it can burn the lining of the gullet and stomach.

Proprietary preparations:
Blistex Relief Cream (combined with liquefied phenol); Goddard's Muscle Lotion (combined with dilute acetic acid and turpentine oil); Mackenzies Smelling Salts (combined with eucalyptus oil).
