Aug 16, 1862. Football player and coach born at West Orange, NJ. Stagg played baseball and football at Yale and then forsook the ministry for physical education. He built the football program at the University of Chicago as an integral part of William Rainey Harper’s plan to build a great university. Over 40 years at Chicago, he became the game’s greatest innovator and master strategist. When Chicago deemphasized football, he moved to the College of the Pacific, finishing his career with a record of 314–181–15. Died at Stockton, CA, Mar 17, 1965.
