Biography

Joseph "Amp" Fiddler is a musician who has an extensive list of credits that extends across a couple decades. Fiddler, who produces and sings in addition to doing the bulk of his duties on keyboards, organs, and pianos, has played on records by Prince, the Brand New Heavies, Ramsey Lewis, George Clinton, the P-Funk All Stars, the Dramatics, Primal Scream, Was (Not Was), and Too Short. With significant help from bass-playing brother Thomas "Bubz" Fiddler (another member of the extended P-Funk family), Amp released With Respect on Elektra in 1990 as Mr. Fiddler. Although the record didn't fare well commercially, it was a solid update of '70s funk with modern production sensibilities. In 2002, Amp issued a 12" called Basementality on the Genuine label. Featuring a remix from close associate Kenny Dixon, Jr. (aka Moodymann), the record was an even split between modern soul and funky club music with Fiddler's talents boldly displayed. The Love and War single came out the following year, and the full-length Waltz of a Ghetto Fly saw release in January 2004. Another solo album, Afro Strut, was released in the U.K. in 2006; Play It Again Sam licensed it for U.S. release a year later. Two years later, Fiddler and Sly & Robbie kicked off the Strut label's collaboration-oriented Inspiration Information series. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

Early career

Fiddler has worked with George Clinton, Moodymann, Stephanie McKay, Jamiroquai, Prince, Was (Not Was), the Brand New Heavies, Fishbone, Corinne Bailey Rae and nu soul artist Maxwell. Working with his brother, Bubz (bass guitarist, producer and songwriter), he released the album With Respect in 1990 on Elektra, recording under the name Mr. Fiddler.[3] Amp Fiddler is credited with introducing hip-hop producer J Dilla to the Akai MPC sampling drum machine and also to A Tribe Called Quest member Q-Tip, who introduced the young Dilla into the music industry world.[4][5]

In regards to Dilla's memory, he said:

The first beat he played for me he looped the whole track from cassette player to cassette player. There were a few drops, but for the most part it was pretty damn precise. So I told him he needs to go home and separate all the samples to load into the MPC, and he came back with all the samples separated and mapped out exactly how he wanted it. As time went on, he got better and better. He used to come by the crib to get on the MPC and he would work on it for three or four hours at a time. He used to have a big smile on his face, because he was so excited after finishing a beat.[6]
