the property of proteins that allows them to interconvert between an inactive form in the cell cytosol and an active membrane-lipid-bound form, commonly in response to signals generated on the membrane. Their membrane affinity can be modulated in various ways including by phosphorylation, palmitoylation, prenylation, calcium, and nucleotides.
