Review

Although traditional fiddler Chubby Wise had appeared on hundreds of recordings by everyone from Hank Snow to Hank Williams, the best place to find his skipping and aching bow work is on the 1995 recording An American Original. Expertly recorded by Sonny Osborne of the Osborne Brothers in late 1994, the nearly 80-year-old fiddler tears through some real barnburners, like "Cotton Eyed Joe" and "Little Liza Jane," but still slows it down for the weepers, "I Can't Stop Loving You" and a great cover of Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." Instrumental bluegrass at its finest, Chubby Wise's An American Original truly lives up to its name. ~ Zac Johnson, Rovi
