Review

This album starts off with that hallmark Malavoi swing on "Kolede" where the strings dance and bob and the percussion crackles under the Pipo Gertrude's vocals and the gliding melody. There is nothing quite like the swing that this group generates. This continues to be true even though they have gone through numerous personnel changes since the late 1980s and early 1990s. However, this album is not nearly as strong as the earlier Malavoi albums. The variety is there, but the songwriting lacks the intensity and exquisite beauty of some the classic material like "La Filo," "Cinello," "Caresse Moin," and "Demarrage." Another high point of the album is Marijose Alie's rendition of "Trant An" ("Thirty Years"), in that pristine sexy voice of hers. Not absolutely essential, but for Malavoi fans worth the purchase for "Kolede" alone. ~ Mark Romano, Rovi
