Review

Ludwig Kosegarten wrote four poems entitled "Rosa." The first and fourth were apparently enormously long and prolix, thereby defying musical setting, but the second and third were short lyrical poems which invited musical setting. Schubert provided this on October 19, 1815, the day which saw a total of seven Kosegarten songs. The first of them, An Rosa I (To Rosa) (D. 315), is in triple time and warm A flat major with a vocal melody which moves gently but impetuously over the quietly rapturous piano accompaniment. With only two verses lasting less than a minute and a half in performance, An Rosa I is brief and charming. ~ James Leonard, Rovi
