Anand Mahindra (हिंदी: आनंद महिन्द्र) (Born on 1 May 1955) is the Chairman and Managing Director of one of India’s largest enterprise, Mahindra & Mahindra. His grandfather KC Mahindra co-founded the company from his hometown Ludhiana, Punjab.^[4] Anand Mahindra resides in his hometown, Mumbai. Keshub Mahindra is the uncle of Anand Mahindra.^[5]

Early life

Anand Mahindra was born into a well-known business family. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College, Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1977, where he was a member of the Phoenix S.K. Club^[6][2] and completed his MBA from Harvard Business School, Boston, Massachusetts in 1981. According to October 26, 2011 rankings of Forbes, his net worth is US $825 million and is ranked #68 in India's rich list.

Career

Mahindra returned to India and joined the Mahindra Ugine Steel Company (MUSCO) as Executive Assistant to the Finance Director in 1981. He became President and Deputy Managing Director in 1989. During this time, he spearheaded the Mahindra Group’s diversification into the new business areas of real estate development and hospitality. In 1991, he was appointed Deputy Managing Director of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. He became the Managing Director in 1997 and took charge from Keshub 14 years ago in 1997.^[7] He took on the additional responsibility of Vice Chairman in 2003.

Mahindra was a co-promoter of Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd, which was converted into a bank in 2003.^[8] Kotak Mahindra Bank is one of the foremost private sector banks today.

Under Anand Mahindra's leadership, the Mahindra Group has set global ambitions and benchmarks for success. The company has grown rapidly through both acquisitions and greenfield business development with several high-profile mergers in the past few years, including the acquisition of Satyam Computer Services in 2009,^[9] Reva Electric Vehicles in 2010,^[10] and Ssangyong Motor Company in 2010.^[11] In 2002, the company launched an indigenously developed SUV, the Scorpio, which today has gone global.

He has recently been ranked amongst the most influential men & women in Mumbai by Daily News and Analysis.^[12]

Interests

Mahindra used to play tennis and has now taken up sailing. He studied filmmaking at Harvard^[13] and remains a keen photographer with a strong interest in film. He enjoys listening to the blues ^[14] and helped set up an annual Mahindra Blues Festival in Mumbai in 2011. Anand Mahindra has recently become a regular user of the social media tool Twitter.^[15]

Other activities

Mahindra is the co-founder of the Harvard Business School Association of India, an association dedicated to the promotion of professional management in India. The association has grown substantially over the years.

He is the co-chair at the World Economic Forum at Davos.

He is Past President 2003-04 of the Confederation of Indian Industry^[16] and has also been President of the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI).

Mahindra is a Director of The National Stock Exchange of India Limited appointed under the "Public Representatives" category.

He takes a keen interest in matters related to education and apart from being a Trustee of the K.C. Mahindra Education Trust, which provides scholarships to students, he is also on the Board of Governors of the Mahindra United World College of India.

He is the Chairman of National Safety Council of India.^[17]

Mahindra is the Founder Chairman of the Mumbai Festival,^[18] which was launched in January 2005. The event was the first comprehensive festival to celebrate the rich cultural diversity of the city.

He is the Co-Chairman of the International Council of the Asia Society, New York.

He is also a Trustee of Naandi Foundation ^[19]one of India's largest NGOs.
