Anand "Satch"[2] Satyanand, PCNZM, QSO, KStJ (born (22 July 1944 in Auckland) is the Governor-General of New Zealand. He previously worked as a lawyer, judge and ombudsman.

Early life and family

Satyanand was born and raised in Auckland to an Indo-Fijian family, his grandparents having arrived in Fiji from India in 1911. They subsequently married on Nukulau Island. Satyanand's father Mutyala Satyanand was born in Sigatoka in 1913 and first came to New Zealand in 1927 to attend high school.[3] His mother Tara Tillak, a nurse, was from Suva and married his father, a medical doctor, after moving to New Zealand.

Satyanand attended Sacred Heart College, Auckland and then later the University of Auckland. Initially he took a medical intermediate course, but later said "...in reality I did not do well enough to gain entry into the medical school. Looking back over that year, I remembered that one of the things I had really enjoyed was the debating and forum meetings involving students."[4] Instead, he took up law and received a Bachelor of Laws in 1970. He worked as a lawyer for the next 12 years, initially for the firm Greig Bourke and Kettelwell. Later, he worked as a barrister for the Crown Law Office. He served on the Council of the Auckland District Law Society from 1979 until his appointment as a judge of the District Court of New Zealand in 1982.

During the 1975 general election, Satyanand and his wife helped David Lange in his first, unsuccessful attempt at election to parliament. Later, when Satyanand was a law student, he helped Clive Edwards (later Tongan deputy prime minister) when he stood in Auckland Central for National.[5]

In 1995, he was appointed an ombudsman and served two five-year terms. Between 2005 and his appointment as Governor-General he chaired the Confidential Forum for Former In-Patients of Psychiatric Hospitals.

He is married and has three adult children.

Governor-General of New Zealand

Satyanand was appointed by Elizabeth II, Queen of New Zealand ,[6] on the advice of Prime Minister Helen Clark. He replaced Dame Silvia Cartwright as Governor-General of New Zealand on 23 August 2006. His appointment was welcomed by every Parliamentary party leader.[7] He is the first New Zealand Governor-General of Asian descent and also the first Roman Catholic to assume the post of Governor-General.[1]

Also, he is the first person in the office of Governor-General not holding a knighthood (Colonel Thomas Gore Browne, a Governor of New Zealand 1855 - 1861, also did not have a knighthood but was knighted in office). However, recent changes meant that upon assuming the role of Governor-General he received the style The Honourable for life.[8].

The Duke of Gloucester, Grand Prior, the Order of St. John received the then Governor-General designate of New Zealand (Mr Anand Satyanand) on 7 July 2006 and invested him as a Knight of Justice of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem. [9]

In May 2007 changes were made to the Queen's Service Order. Under the old Royal Warrant, the Governor-General was ex-officio Principal Companion of the Order, but was not a member of the Order. The new Royal Warrant now provides for the appointment of a Governor-General to be a Companion of the Order in his or her own right.[10]

The first bill he granted Royal Assent to was the Coroners Bill.[11]

Fijian coup talks

On 30 November 2006, Satyanand hosted a meeting between the then Fijian Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase and Fiji's military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama at Government House in Wellington, in an attempt to resolve the escalating crisis in Fiji. Although he hosted the meeting, he did not take part in the discussions which was chaired by New Zealand's Foreign Minister, Winston Peters.[12] Satyanand's gambit was the last serious effort by the international community to avert the military coup that followed on 5 December.
