Emperor of the eastern Roman empire who succeeded Zeno in ad 491. Born c.ad 430 he was a careful and prudent administrator who reformed the currency, and spent much time in attempts to reconcile the irreconcilable viewpoints of theologians in the empire. Died c.ad 518.
