Review

This 18-song compilation is an interesting mixture of some of the best-known -- and a few of the least-favored -- versions of Jimmy Webb's songs, all of which are eminently listenable. Webb's own version of "Didn't We" comes off very well in the company of renditions of "If This Were the Last Song," "If Ships Were Made to Sail," "Where's the Playground Susie?," and "The Highwayman" by, respectively, Bill Medley, Scott Walker, Glen Campbell, and the Highwaymen; and while the Johnny Mann Singers are no substitute for the Fifth Dimension, their version of "Up, Up and Away" is convincingly, infectiously upbeat. The sound is excellent, and the sheer variety of sounds, from Judy Collins ("The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress") to Donna Summer ("MacArthur Park"), makes this entertaining listening, and it's entirely possible that even many fans of Webb's music may not have heard his version of "Didn't We." ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
