Review

Although only 19 at the time of this recording, this was actually Shawn Wallace's fourth release as a leader; his first three albums were on his own Mijawa label. Performing with a sextet that also includes veteran pianist Eddie Russ, trumpeter Dwight Adams, and trombonist Sherman Mitchell, Wallace (whether on alto, tenor, soprano, flute, or piccolo) is the lead voice throughout this impressive effort. Twelve of the 14 songs are his, and the repertoire ranges from hard-swinging bop to moodier ballads. Highlights include Wallace's flute and piccolo playing on John Coltrane's "Giant Steps," the inspiring "Dreams Come True," the jazz waltz "My Father," and the blues-with-a-bridge "Some Kind of Blue." Worth searching for. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
