Anderson was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and later moved to Charlotte as a child. Wallace Sellars, a friend of a producer/Soulife A&R Vice President, Mike City, heard Anderson singing on her way to the cafeteria of North Carolina Central University (where she earned a B.S. in criminal justice) and introduced the two.[1] From there, Anderson was managed by Macy Gray during the recording of her first album.[2][3][4][5]
Heard It All Before, the lead single, charted at #18 on the Hot 100 and a #3 on the R&B charts. With the top ten hit Heard It All Before, Sunshine Anderson quickly became one of Soullife/Atlantic's signature singers. "Heard It All Before" illustrated how relatable relationship issues are. On April 17, 2001, Sunshine Anderson released her first studio album, entitled Your Woman. The album debut at #5 on the Billboard's Hot 200 and #2 on the Billboard's Top R&B albums chart. The album also charted on UK Album chart at #39. Lunch or Dinner, the second single from Your Woman. The single debut at #54 on Hot R&B charts. Later the album's release, the album became certified gold in America.
After the release of Your Woman, Sunshine Anderson toured with R. Kelly and Syleena Johnson, which began on July 1, 2001. The concert tour contained twenty-six tour dates in America and collection of songs from her present album, Your Woman. The Your Woman Tour was singer Sunshine Anderson's first concert tour, intended to showcase songs from her debut solo album, Your Woman. The tour ended on August 18, 2001 and held 26 shows.[6] In 2003, Sunshine left Atlantic Records and started searching for a new record label.
In August 2004, Anderson signed to Matthew Knowles' new record label Music World Entertainment. In 2005, Anderson started her own record label, entitled "Shining Star".[7] In 2006, the lead single "Something I Wanna Give You" was released and debut at #80 on Hot R&B charts. A video for lead single "Something I Wanna Give You" was shot August 2006 in Los Angeles by director Gil Green.[8]
On January 23, 2007, Sunshine Anderson released her sophomore album, entitled "Sunshine at Midnight". The album debut at #86 on Billboard's Hot 200 and #16 on Hot R&B charts. In addition to release of the album, Anderson toured with singer Brian McKnight. In May 2007, the album's second single "Force of Nature" was released and debut at #75 on Hot R&B charts.[7]
Anderson became pregnant in February 2007 and got married in July of the same year. She confirmed that she would have to slow down on her career, as her child was due November.[7]
