A state since 1953 with a name meaning the 'State of the Andhras'. Pradesh comes from the Sanskrit pradesa 'province'. Telugu is the local form of Telinga which was used in Sanskrit texts. The Telugu andhramu means 'Telugu'. Andhra is now the official name to describe the people and their language.
