(b Lisbon, Nov 1685; d Lisbon, 15 June 1762). Portuguese painter. A pupil of the Genoese artist Giulio Cesare de Femine ( fl Lisbon, 1710-c. 1733), he joined the Irmandade de S Lucas in 1712, remaining a member until 1754. He was the most active Portuguese painter during the reign (1706-50) of John V, working mainly in Lisbon and Coimbra, but part of his large output was destroyed in the earthquake of 1755.
