André Masséna

Britannica Concise Encyclopedia: André Masséna, duke de Rivoli

(born May 6, 1758, Nice, France — died April 4, 1817, Paris) French general. Entering the military in 1775, he served in the Revolutionary government's army and rose to general in 1793. In campaigns against the Austrians in Italy, he became Napoleon's most trusted officer; he then commanded the French army in Switzerland, defeating the Russians at Zürich (1799). Sent by Napoleon to restore the demoralized army of Italy, he successfully defended Genoa against Austrian besiegers and enabled the French victory at the Battle of Marengo. He was made a marshal in 1804 and duke de Rivoli in 1808. He displayed heroism against the Austrians, notably at Aspern-Essling and the Battle of Wagram (1809), and Napoleon made him prince d'Essling (1810). In command of the French forces in Portugal and Spain (1810 – 11), he was defeated by the British under the duke of Wellington. Masséna was relieved of his command and returned to Paris, where he supported the restoration of the monarchy.

Masséna, Marshal André, Duc de Rivoli, Prince d'Essling (1758-1817). Born at Nice in 1758, Masséna served fourteen years in the ranks of the infantry, leaving in 1789 to join a volunteer battalion which elected him its commander in 1792. A general in 1793, he trounced the Austrians at Rivoli in January 1797 and went on to defeat the Russians at Zurich. Given command of the battered Army of Italy, he held Genoa for two months, surrendering on terms. His stout defence distracted the Austrians, helping Bonaparte (see Napoleon) to invade northern Italy and beat them at Marengo.

Genoa broke Masséna's health, but he was made marshal in 1804 and commanded a corps in Poland in 1807. Napoleon peppered him at a shooting party in 1808, costing him an eye. Masséna did well in the war against Austria in 1809, and was sent to command the Army of Portugal in 1810. He was accompanied by a lady, unconvincingly disguised as a dragoon officer, which led to unpleasantness amongst his corps commanders. Following Wellington into Portugal, he found only scorched earth in front of the Lines of Torres Vedras. Wellington beat him at Busaco in September and Fuentes de Oũoro in May 1811. Masséna was replaced shortly afterwards: he had told Napoleon that he was past his best, and was undoubtedly right.

Masséna, André (äNdrā' mäsānä'), 1758-1817, marshal of France, b. Nice. Of humble origin, he entered (1791) the French army and rose rapidly because of his brilliant tactical abilities. He served under Napoleon Bonaparte in the Italian campaign, won the battle of Rivoli (1797), where he earned a reputation for rapaciousness, and distinguished himself in Napoleon's campaigns of 1800 and 1809 against Austria. In 1799, Masséna's victory over the Russians at Zürich saved France from invasion by the Second Coalition (see French Revolutionary Wars). Masséna's subsequent failure in the Peninsular War is often attributed to the lack of cooperation of the other French commanders. Masséna's relations with Napoleon were somewhat strained because of Masséna's republican convictions, but he lacked political ambition, and Napoleon honored his military achievements by making him duke of Rivoli (1808) and prince of Essling (1810). After Napoleon's fall in 1814, Masséna supported Louis XVIII, who raised him to the peerage (1815). His neutral attitude during the Hundred Days was attacked by the royalists after the Restoration.
