André Maugars
(bc 1580; d c 1645). French bass viol player and writer. Praised by Mersenne and Rousseau as one of the first great French viol virtuosos, he held a church appointment near Puy. The open letter he published after his visit to Rome (c 1637) is an invaluable account of Italian music of the period and provides early comparisons between French and Italian styles.
