(b Venice, c.1510; d Venice, 1586). It. organist and composer. Singer at St Mark's, Venice, 1536. Met Lassus when in Ger. 1562, forming lasting friendship. Org. St Mark's 1566–86. Pupils incl. Hassler, Sweelinck, and his nephew Giovanni Gabrieli. Wrote 7 masses and a large quantity of sacred motets and secular madrigals, psalm‐settings, and org. works.
