(b Copenhagen, 2 March 1801; d there, 8 Nov 1880). Danish folklorist,teacher and composer. A self-taught organist and singing master, he collected and edited Danish and foreign folksongs and composed a notable set of hymn tunes; he also taught music theory. His works, mainly cantatas and partsongs, are indebted to Viennese Classical models.
