Anegenge (i.e. ‘Anfang’), an Early Middle High German theological poem treating of redemption and salvation, which are seen to be God's plan from the beginning. The title is in the original. The substance of Genesis and the Gospels is subordinated to dogmatic interpretation. The Austrian cleric, who wrote it c.1160, was unskilled in abstract thought, and the view has been advanced that his work is a versification of lecture notes. This poem is sometimes known as das jüngere Anegenge, to distinguish it from the Ezzolied, which also discourses ‘von dem anegenge’.
