Review
In 2000, Philippine group Saga released Ang Aking Awit (This Song of Mine). Saga consists of four famous, veteran male singers/musicians and as such, Saga can be considered a supergroup. Whether or not the band records another album remains to be seen, but the release of this album is a joy and a momentous occasion. One member of Saga is highly respected singer/songwriter Freddie Aguilar, who by himself virtually started the Philippine folk/rock movement in the 1970s. His late '70s recording, "Anak" (Son), which he composed, was a hit in many countries.
Also in Saga is Mike Hanopol, a member of the famed 1970s rock group Juan dela Cruz Band. Another Saga member is Vehnee Saturno, a prolific songwriter and highly respected producer and arranger. Also in Saga is Rey Valera, a famous singer, songwriter, and producer. The four Saga members sing (as well as takes turns producing) but don't play instruments.
Ang Aming Awit contains a variety of musical styles. "Hoy, Juan" (Hey, John), composed by Freddie Aguilar, is a rollicking, rock-inflected ditty, while "Ang Aking Awit" (This Song of Mine), composed by Vehnee Saturno, is a substantive, tender love song. Two of the album's best songs, "Magmahalan" (To Love)) and "Pag-Aaral" (To Study), were composed by Mike Hanopol. "Magmahalan" starts on tender acoustic guitar and an ethnic-sounding flute line, joined by infectious harmony singing by Saga of a memorable melody line. A pretty string section (presumably played on synthesizer) weaves throughout the song. Many songs on Ang Aming Awit feature finely honed harmony singing by the four members of Saga. ~ David Gonzales, All Music Guide
