(b Madrid, 1 Dec 1891; d Madrid, 25 July 1961). Spanish sculptor and writer. Both his father and grandfather were painters, and he started drawing when still a child. He later recalled that he became a sculptor because he was always more attracted by volumes than planes, responding to a piece of cardboard with a pair of scissors rather than with a pencil. He studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid from 1904 to 1908, and in 1913 he travelled through Belgium, Germany and Italy, also spending a period in Paris. His residence abroad brought him into contact with Cubism and Futurism, and he became a great admirer of Boccioni and Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. In 1918 he began teaching modelling and moved to La Coru?a; there, together with some friends, he began publishing the review Alfar and exhibited his first sculptures.
