(angiotensin II antagonists)

Drugs that inhibit the action of angiotensin II, a hormone that constricts blood vessels. They have similar effects to angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and are used in the treatment of hypertension and heart failure. Unlike angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors they do not produce a dry cough. See candesartan cilexetil; eprosartan; irbesartan; losartan potassium; olmesartan; telmisartan; valsartan.

Side effects:
these are usually mild; dizziness occassionally occurs, more rarely rash and oedema (swelling) of the face.

Precautions:
angiotensin II inhibitors should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
