Statuesque are a bit of a rarity in mid-'90s British rock, in that they decline to choose between their dreamy, shoegazer influences and their tendency toward cleaner, Sarah Records-style pop -- the band is equally effective with either style, and a combination of the two is somewhat refreshing among artists who follow one or the other to an extreme, or wind up watering both down into mainstream slickness. On the Angleterre EP, Statuesque move seamlessly between Field Mice-style pop and dramatic, spacy rock along the lines of the Charlottes' "Meltdown Disney," frequently within one song -- "Three Quarter Moon" opens with smoothly distorted glides of guitar, then widens into a lighter pop sound, with both elements setting each other off so that the whole is more appealing than either of its parts might be otherwise. ~ Nitsuh Abebe, Rovi
