ankle equinus

A structural abnormality of the ankle joint occurring when there is less than 10-20° ankle joint dorsiflexion during walking or running. To compensate for limited ankle joint dorsiflexion, the subtalar joint may overpronate and other faulty biomechanics may occur. Athletes with ankle equinus typically have a bouncy gait that can lead to ligament strains and muscle strains of the foot and lower leg. Ankle equinus may be caused by a tightening or shortening of the soleus or gastrocnemius muscles.
