ankle instability

Sports Science and Medicine: ankle instability

A predisposition for fractures, dislocations, and sprains in time ankle. Chronic instability is thought to be due to repeated injuries stretching the ligaments, weakening muscles, compromising proprioception, and impairing coordination. The ankle becomes lax and ‘gives way’ more easily. To improve stability after an ankle injury, rehabilitation should include exercises that strengthen the muscles of the lower leg, and training on an unstable surface, such as a wobble board, to regain proprioception and coordination.
