The Ann Arbor Railroad (reporting mark AA) is a shortline railroad connecting Toledo, Ohio and Ann Arbor, Michigan. It began operations on October 7, 1988 as successor to the Michigan Interstate Railway. Until 1976, the line was operated by a different Ann Arbor Railroad, which continued north from Ann Arbor to Frankfort with carferry operations across Lake Michigan. The Great Lakes Central Railroad operates the remainder north of Ann Arbor.

Lines

The Ann Arbor Railroad operates its predecessor's main line from Ann Arbor, Michigan to the terminus at Ottawa Yard in Toledo, Ohio. It has two branch lines, the Saline Branch, inherited from the New York Central railroad's Ypsilanti-Hillsdale line, and the former Toledo Belt Railroad grade to connect with Temperance Yard. The line beyond Temperance Yard has primarily removed, except for a minor portion owned by CSX Transportation.

Cargo

The contemporary Ann Arbor hauls a variety of cargoes but much of its traffic is related to the automobile industry. Its primary cargoes include outbound finished vehicles from DaimlerChrysler's Toledo North Assembly (Jeep) Plant; inbound finished Ford vehicles to a distribution lot in North Toledo; inbound vehicles to a new (2006) distribution lot off Manhattan Boulevard in North Toledo; auto parts from Visteon in Saline, Mich.; foundry sand interchanged from the Great Lakes Central Railroad at Ann Arbor (Osmer), Mich., and forwarded to other railroads at Toledo—primarily onto NS for delivery to the Ford engine plant in Brook Park, Ohio; shipped outbound cement from Holcim near Dundee, Mich. until plant closed in 2009;[1] and grain trains received in interchange from GLC and delivered to CSX at Toledo.

Locomotive Fleet

Its current locomotive fleet comprises three Electro-Motive GP38 models (AA 7771, AA 7791, AA 7802) of Conrail ancestry and two GP39-2 models (AA 2368 and AA 2373), prior Union Pacific and MKT locomotives. In Winter 2011, the Ann Arbor Railroad again purchased two new locomotives from Union Pacific, AA 1337 and AA 2370.
