(1970), compiled by Grahame Johnston, lists, by yearly entries, noteworthy Australian books from 1789 to 1968 in alphabetical order of authors and with an accompanying abbreviation to indicate genre. The listing was expanded and updated to 1988 by Joy Hooton and Harry Heseltine in a second edition published in 1992. Side columns to the yearly entries contain such ancillary information as authors' birth and death dates; the founding and duration of newspapers and periodicals; visits or books by notable writers from overseas; books written in Australia in languages other than English; some books on non-Australian subjects by authors whose other works are in the main column; books written abroad by authors now settled in Australia; and English classics referring to Australia.
