(b Southport, 1941). Eng. mezzo‐soprano. Sang Eros in f. Eng. p. of Gluck's Paride ed Elena while student at RMCM. Glyndebourne ch. 1964–7. Débuts: WNO 1966 (Flora in La traviata); CG 1967; Glyndebourne 1967; Amer. (Chicago) 1972; NY Met 1975; Salzburg 1976. Created Lena in Bennett's Victory, London 1967, Cathleen in Maw's The Rising of the Moon, Glyndebourne 1970, and Régine in Liebermann's La Forêt, Geneva 1987.
