Hector, Annie (née Annie French; pseudonym ‘Mrs Alexander’) (1825-1902), novelist. Born in Dublin, she moved to Liverpool, then London. In 1845 she became a magazine writer with encouragement from Mrs [Anna Maria] Hall, issuing her first novel, Look Before You Leap, in 1865. The Wooing of O't (1873) was a three-decker tale of an orphaned middle-class London girl who refuses an English lord, but accepts his impoverished cousin. Kitty Costello (1904) is the story of a naïve Irish girl come to England.
