Another Mediterranean Taste Adventure

Album Review: Another Mediterranean Taste Adventure

Review

During their brief tenure as a band, Michigan's Cornish in a Turtleneck churned out a wealth of wonderfully quirky rock operas. Forever unpredictable and improvisational, Another Mediterranean Taste Adventure was the band's Pet Sounds and a labor of love by vocalist/guitarist Tim Schreiber. Recorded from April 1999 until April 2000, the title was inspired by a poster at a Michigan restaurant. The disc gets off to a whimsical start with the multi-layered richness of "Melting Flower," a genuinely catchy and wistful ode to young love. Eric Oakes and Juan Garcia add various instruments to the song, as well as throughout the disc, which is a colorful and vibrant group effort. "Nite Song" is the closest thing to a ballad on the album, as Schreiber's vocals weave over the irreverent Casio and guitar strains. "Venetian Vacation" features some of the most playful music since Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, with Schreiber's most fiery vocals of the disc and more wild inventiveness from Schreiber, Garcia, and Oakes. Again, the band's unexpected chord changes make the song and the album an interesting listen throughout. "Casio Concerto" serves as an intermission, featuring a brief and relaxed keyboard instrumental. Like all stellar albums, the disc never reaches its plateau, offering a playful chant and wonderfully over-the-top keyboard antics on "Shrine of the Bee" and "Tryceretops/Something Real," which features a surprisingly mellow acoustic guitar lead, followed by a powerful and ridiculously catchy ending. Forever the storyteller and performer, Schreiber is at the center of each song, pushing his vocal range on the remarkable, '70s-influenced "Survive." "Fuzzy Sound" bookends the ten-track effort to a sophisticated and dramatic ending. Unlike any other band, the band's songs feature unique stops and starts, wildly creative chord structures, and unexpected electronic experiments. The band was brimming with youthful charisma and creative energy throughout their brief history, and this disc finds them at the top of their game. ~ Stephen Cramer, All Music Guide
