Anpao

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Email

In Lakota mythology (a Native American mythology, since Lakota is a branch of Santee Sioux), Anpao is an entity with two faces that represents the spirit of the dawn.

George Bushotter (Yankton Dakota-Lakota, 1860–1892) wrote that when his younger brother was ill, he was told to pray to Anpao, the Dawn, and recovered.[1] Anpao zi is the "yellow of the dawn," which in oral history has described the meadowlark's breast.[2]
